About the Author:
Dr. Moye, a professor of Biostatistics at the University of Texas School of Public Health and a medical doctor, along with many of his colleagues, witnessed and interacted with these great people as they clung to hope in the wake of a natural and man-made disaster that included the breaching of the levees and an incredibly hostile government rescue response. The survivors stories of life and death and heroic self-sacrifice that Dr. Moye relates are in direct contradiction with the media depictions of the poor people of New Orleans. Dr. Moye, himself a proud African-American man, had been led by the mass media to believe that the people he was volunteering to help would be animalistic and selfish. What he found was the very opposite! "The survivors operated from a compassionate and gracious strength of heart that endured this most severe of tests. ...This book is my tribute to them."
Review:
"Dr. Moye's work is a great tribute to the resolve and strength of spirit of the people of the Gulf Coast region in the face of tragedy. While the experiences of those affected by Hurricane Katrina are a reminder of the depth and breadth of the devastation, the unwavering determination of the survivors provides a source of optimism for the future." -- Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, D California House Democratic Leader, U.S. House of Representatives --Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, D California
"Dr. Moye's depiction of his conversations with Katrina Survivors is riveting. His account of their valor, tragedy and hope is unforgettable. It captures, forever, the pathos of one of America s truly worst bureaucratic nightmares. -- Dr. Edward Fort, Chancellor Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Education North Carolina A&T State University --Dr. Edward Fort, Chancellor Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Education
Finally, a marvelous departure from the media's focus on the negative aspects of the Katrina catastrophe. Stories of the enduring human spirit challenged individuals at their best not their sensational worst, remarkable almost unbelievable Katrina survivors and compassionate volunteers told with skill and mastery by Lemuel A. Moye. -- Louise Davis Stone, Freelance editor and writer Retired Director of the Publications Division, NC Department of Labor --Louise Davis Stone, Freelance editor and writer
