From Library Journal:
Although it covers some of the same nontraditional territory as 1960's The New American Poetry (edited by Donald M. Allen), this anthology draws on 30 years of hindsight to establish a literary continuum between the Modernists and the recent products of language-oriented poets. Editor Weinberger includes only poems written after 1950 and favors ambitious longer pieces. The display is dazzling, from William Bronk's elliptical, epistemological probings to William Everson's symphonic "A Canticle to the Waterbirds"; from John Cage's rich improvisations to David Antin's severe litanies. Though one might wish for the inclusion of a few more deserving contemporaries (e.g., Beverly Dahlen, Lyn Hejinian) and some scholarly apparatus to help with difficult work, this collection exhibits a vibrancy and challenge sadly absent from the poetic mainstream in the last half of our century. Perhaps it will provide some starting points for the next. Recommended for public and academic libraries.
