Maggie Kahin was a remarkable woman. She was heir to a clipper ship fortune, a well-educated intellectual raised in Litchfield, Connecticut. Yet Maggie grew up in frustration, by circumstance and upbringing unable to relate to others, to express her inner feelings, fears, joys and sorrows. She married, raised two children and devoted herself to her husband's career, only to be devastated by an unexpected divorce. Recalling Wyoming's mind-saving way of life she'd discovered on visits to a dude ranch in earlier years, Maggie fled to the Rockies. There in the peaceful solitude of the mountains, she slowly but surely found mental and spiritual rejuvenation and became able to express herself in a special way. Near Dubois, Wyoming, she founded Ring Lake Ranch, an internationally known ecumenical retreat. She went on to become a communicator and a Methodist minister. And although Maggie passed away before seeing all her efforts bear fruit, she leaves a very warm feeling in all who knew her. It is seldom an author is able to give the reader a real window into another's life. In "Maggie," Betty Case has transcended normal biographical writing. Somehow, Betty passed beyond the outer self, to find Maggie Kahin's true inner being and personality, and gives us a wonderfully refreshing story of a true visionary.
