Grade 6-8-- These books compare favorably to those in the "Encyclopedia of Presidents" series (Childrens). Books in both series are similar in arrangement; the first chapter catches readers' interest with a description of a momentous event in the President's life, and the real story of his life begins in the second chapter. Both series offer useful chronologies, although the Children's Press listings are more extensive. The GEC books are slightly longer, and contain more information about each President's family life as well as a more ambitious portrayal of his personality. The Children's Press titles place more emphasis on facts and dates from the historical period and have more illustrations. Covers for both series are colorfully eye-catching and patriotic, although the cover portraits for the GEC books are more realistic, and they include the numerical order of the President. The GEC books look less like textbooks than the Children's Press series; they also include annotated bibliographies, which the Children's Press titles do not. Although Falkof is guilty of putting some rather silly fictional dialogue in the mouth of George Washington, most information in the GEC books is objective. For a consistently readable style and clarity of the personal portraits, the GEC series is superior.
