Grade 6-9-- Ergon, a pure energy being, takes environmentally careless Katy and Mark on imaginary journeys to discover the sources of electrical energy, its fossil fuel and nuclear origins, and their detrimental effects on the environment. Other ecological issues such as overpopulation and waste disposal are also introduced. The ultimate consequences of current practices are vividly demonstrated by visits to the planets of Barren and Noxious. Yanda is a strong advocate for developing solar energy and emphasizes the uselessness of current technologies and their possible improvements. Despite this definite bias and the didactic nature of the story, Rads, Ergs, and Cheeseburgers succeeds in holding readers' attention with lively dialogue, good pacing, and varied incidents. Difficult scientific concepts are reasonably well explained and logically woven into the narrative--no small achievement. The message is clear, and there are no subtleties or compromises. Most of the black-and-orange cartoons merely decorate the pages. A list of conservation organizations is included.
