From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4-- Truman is so busy imagining life as a dog that when his teacher asks him the answer to seven times eight, he barks. That night he dreams that he switches identities with his dog, Max. Their adventures at school the next day are rather predictable, and culminate with a talking dog correctly answering the teacher's question. Equally predictable is the book's conclusion, in which Truman wakes up from his dream to find that he and Max have regained their own identities. Lorenz's spirited illustrations give the story what little pizzazz it has. Max is delightful in both his canine and his human guises; unfortunately, the pictures can't carry the tedious text. Dick Gackenbach's Dog for a Day (Clarion, 1987) is intended for a younger audience, but is far more successful than this selection. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, TX
