In 1778, nat the age of 23, the artist Elisabeth Vigée-le Brun painted her first portrait of QUeen Marie Antoinette. Eleven years later, fearful for her life, she fled France on the eve of the French Revolution. Disguised as a peasant with her six-year-old daughter in tow, she embarked on a working voyage round the courts of Europe, painting the rich, clever, noble and beautiful of her day.
