About the Author:

Laurie Penman is known in the world of clocks as a restorer, tutor and author. Trained as an engineer, he practised for severail years in engineering development and management, before taking to clockmaking as a result of disability. It did not take long to discover the differences between engineering and clocking and adjust from a world of close tolerances to that of the craftsman-fitter.

This adjustments was sometimes expensive for a man trying to make a living at the trade. It was particularly frustrating to discover that many of the books available were no substitute for being taught by a practising clockmaker. As a result he devoloped his own solutions for such problems as the making of escapements, fusee movements. He is a regular contributor to "Clocks" magazine, where his writings has a strong practical element and his methods have been rigorously tested at the bench

He is currently engaged in the design of the movement and pudulum for the Millenium Clock- a clock made to last for a thousand years and to be built in rhodium, aluminium bronze, stainless stell and brass.
