About the Author:

Chia-Shun Yih (1918 - 1997), born in Kweiyang, China, was Stephen P. Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan. He is remembered by his students as an inpiring teacher whose excitement and enthusiasm for his subject were contagious.

His published work includes well over 100 scientific papers and two books: Dynamics of Nonhomogeneous Fluids -- later revised as Stratified Flows -- and Fluid Mechanics: a Concise Introduction to the Theory.

His numerous honors include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henry Russel Lectureship (University of Michigan), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (Germany), the Theodore von Karman Medal (Amer. Soc. of Civil Engineers), the Stephan S. Attwood Award (Univ. of Michigan), the Fluid Dynamics Prize (Amer. Physical Soc.), and the Otto Laporte Award (APS).
