Father Dyer, at the age of 49 and with failing eyesight, walked from Iowa to arrive in Breckenridge, Colorado in 1841. His autobiography, The Snow-shoe Itinerant : An Autobiography of the Rev. John L. Dyer, Familiarly Known as "Father Dyer" of the Colorado Conference, published in 1890, describes this part of the world. Kent Gunnufson photographs Summit County with b/w film, where "the mountains reach into the clouds. the waters are cold and blue; the air is crsp and clean; and the snow is light and deep", and over which Breckenridge reigns as county seat.
