Thursday, August 21, 1975. I am beginning this journal because, in the two weeks since we first met them, the Vietnamese family has managed to overturn almost every preconception I had about them, so much so that now I seem to need a record to keep track. Even in the three days since they arrived at our house, nothing has been as I would have predicted...much more pleasant, in fact. We talk around our language barrier, share the house, go to the store-and they accept whatever we offer with such good cheer that we are amazed, prepared as we were for their reticence and unease. Strange food, stranger surroundings, nothing seems to phase them. They do not seem upset or nervous or even worried. Our time together-this serious-sounding business of sponsoring a refugee family-has been like a game.
