The second book in Paulson's Hands on the World Environmental Series brings full circle the recycling process that was introduced in Johnny and the Old Oak Tree. In Sir Johnny's Recycling Adventure, the old oak teaches Johnny the importance of closing the recycling loop by purchasing products which are made from or packaged in recycled material. Once again, the author captures the imagination and enthusiasm of a child enjoying the outdoors. Johnny is that child, and he sees himself doing battle with the giant trash monster. His best friend, the old oak tree helps him to understand that saving the environment is much easier than fencing with a fire-breathing garbage dragon. Johnny learns that we can all help by participating in each phase of recycling: reduce, reuse, recycle AND look for recycled products and packaging when shopping. At the back of this book, Paulson includes several pages of take-action activities and recycling resources designed to inspire people of all ages to make a difference.

From the Publisher:
The environment is a boundless source of fascination for people of all ages, especially young children. When Rachael Paulson's 3-year-old queried her about the stacks of newspapers piled in the kitchen, she discovered that children's books about recycling were hard to find. What happened next was quite unexpected. Having been a teacher, Paulson knew how to communicate with children, and used this skill to craft a charming book that tells the story of recycling. In the hope that she might find some help in printing her story, Paulson approached Champion International Corporation. Not only did they donate all the recycled paper necessary for printing the book, but also went one step further. Recognizing the educational value of imparting this message to young children, they purchased and donated hundreds of copies of the book to school libraries around the country. Paulson is passionate about teaching children about their world, and has found that young people are often misinformed about environmental issues, hearing only negative information about mistreatment of the environment. Crestmont Publishing was born out of passion. Her goal was to educate children to make responsible choices and to empower them to make a difference; to teach them that while we need to use the earth's resources to live, we must also take special care to protect our planet. Crestmont Publishing now works directly with companies who share Paulson's commitment to education. Together, they bring environment-themed educational books to schools across the United States. These books, known as the Hands on the World environmental series, motivate children by showing the "why" we take from the earth and teaching the "how" they can make a difference.
About the Author:
The oldest of eight children, Rachael Peterpaul Paulson grew up in Roselle, New Jersey. When she was fourteen years old, her younger brother Johnny died suddenly at the age of seven. Making Johnny the main character of her books has helped bring her brother to life. Paulson's ability to make recycling an adventure for her young readers is due in part to her 10 years of teaching experience. She also gets many story ideas by observing the creative playfulness of her own children, Danielle and Mikey. Paulson currently lives with her husband and two children in a quaint lake-style cottage overlooking Lake Mohawk in Sparta, New Jersey. The view from her deck inspires her to forge ahead in her effort to preserve the beauty of nature. Her children, Danielle and Mikey, continue to fascinate her with their curiosity about and love of the great outdoors. Her second book, entitled Sir Johnny's Recycling Adventure was recently adopted as part of Retired General Colin Powell's youth education and empowerment program, America's Promise. Paulson is currently working on the third book in her Hands on the World Environmental Series.
