About the Author:
Judith Hoffman and Anne Lee have devoted their lives to serving the needs of children and education. Ms. Hoffman has been a member of the North Carolina Wake County Board of Education and served an unprecedented three consecutive terms as chairman. As a member of the Wake County NC Board of Education, Ms Hoffman initiated the award-winning Wake County Character Education Program with Ms. Lee's help. Ms. Lee has been an assistant principal and counselor. She has taught elementary school as well as parenting classes. She has been a presenter at conferences including PREP, Character Education Partnership National Conference, and several national conferences. Ms. Lee has been a character education consultant for school systems across North Carolina.

(One of the) areas of focus must be the school climate. The goal is to create a culture of character in our schools. We want to reverse the current trend in which it is considered 'cool' to break the rules and get away with it. Our goal is to model and affirm ethical behavior so that it is once again considered cool to be a person of character. (Another area of focus) is community involvement. Schools need to welcome members of the community as volunteers and use them effectively. Tutors and mentors can play a significant role in character development. During a time when many children lack positive role models or adults who display a keen personal interest in them, a committed tutor or mentor can be life-changing. Community members can also be utilized as motivational speakers and readers.
