Hendin has pursued his four-decade interest in coins and archaeology of the Middle East alongside his successful careers as an award-winning medical journalist, publishing executive, and literary agent for clients who have included cartoonists Charles M. Schulz (creator of PEANUTS) and Lincoln Peirce (creator of BIG NATE) as well as authors such as Judith Martin (MISS MANNERS), mystery writer Elaine Viets, and Alan M. Dershowitz.
He is author of five eiditons of Guide to Biblical Coins, Ancient Scale Weights, and Not Kosher (Forgeries of Ancient Jewish and Biblical Coins). He is also the author of the national bestseller Death as a Fact of Life and eight other nonfiction books that have been translated into six languages.
His work has earned more than a dozen literary awards, ranging from the Numismatic Literary Guild's "Best Magazine Column" to the Medical Journalism Award of the American Medical Association.
Hendin has lectured on Judaean and Biblical coins in Italy, England, and Israel as well as at seminars of the American Numismatic Society, the American Numismatic Association, and many colleges and other organizations. In 1985 and 1986 he was chief numismatist of the Joint Sepphoris Project under the auspices of Duke University and Hebrew University. As chairman of the numismatic committee of the Jewish Museum in New York, Hendin prepared and acquired coins for the exhibit Coins Reveal with Ya'akov Meshorer. He edited and published Meshorer's A Treasury of Jewish Coins and Ancient Jewish Coinage.
Hendin is a curatorial associate and life fellow of the American Numismatic Society and has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1974.
