"Anna! Anna Kate!"
Anna Kate turned at the sound of that beloved voice. "Diana, is it you?"
Rushing toward her, having pushed through the throng of Friday shoppers, Diana Jane Atwood fell into her childhood friend's arms upon reaching her.
Anna Kate hugged Diana and cried, "It is wonderful to see you. I have missed you so!" She then held the tall, rake-thin girl back at arm's length to get a good look at her. "Diana, what is wrong?"
Diana's face looked gray and drawn. She threw herself into Anna Kate's arms and began to sob. "Anna, oh, Anna. What a blessed sight you are!" She cried herself out, then stepped away from her friend. Dipping her head in shame, she fumbled in the sleeve of her over-washed, thin cotton dress for a handkerchief. Over the dress she wore a thin sweater, nothing heavy enough for the weather.
Why was her wealthy friend not in silks or satins? She would not ask now, considering the crowds of people. Most merely rushed on past, ignoring the two. Others, too many for Anna's taste, stared. Putting her arm around Diana, she led her down the street to a small millinery shop. "Let's go in here to talk a bit. I'm sure Madame Veronique will not mind."
Anna Kate led Diana into the shop and then to a slipper chair covered in a forest green brocade. Diana looked as though she folded herself in half, gently like egg whites, as she eased into the chair.
"Are you in pain?" Anna whispered.
Diana shook her head, but tears started in her large gray eyes. "Come close, Anna Kate," she whispered.
"What is it?"
Diana reached inside the bodice of her dress. Handing Anna Kate a black velvet pouch, stitched around all four edges, she said. "Please keep this safe for me. You'll never know how important it is."
