In the 1850s, antebellum mansions with white columnar porches dotted the Virginia landscape. Beyond the path, made with handmade bricks, the small cabins of the slave quarters were overshadowed by the beautiful houses.
As rumors of war between the North and South increase, slaves on many plantations revolt and blood is shed on both sides. The slaves sense freedom is near as more and more escape to the North via the Underground Railroad.
Tilda, the daughter of a mulatto slave woman, is a barefoot beauty with the features and coloring of her white father, but she is hopelessly caught in two worlds--that of the slave and the white side of her heritage.
Tilda refuses to accept the writ of freedom from James, her owner, a separation she has feared since the day he bought her on the auction block. She knows to be owned by him is never to be far from his presence. Even when James marries, Tilda, though brokenhearted, refuses freedom for she cannot bring herself to leave the presence of one whose love gives her life and the desire to live.
James joins the Confederate Army to fight the invading Yankees. Tilda is left with only her memories of their secret meetings, her heart aching for his return. Yankee soldiers arrive to occupy Stafford Hall, destroying much of it in the process, while devouring the livestock and foodstuffs. Tilda and three others stay on, trying to hold onto Stafford Hall, until their former master returns. He had vowed that their love was strong enough to surpass all restrictions imposed by the customs and times in which they lived; that some day, regardless of what happened to either of them, their love would somehow survive--survive even the grave.
And Tilda believed him. It gave her eternal hope. She felt that what had been in her heart since childhood would never die. She believed true love was like the wind--a powerful force to rise again and show a mighty strength that nothing could stop.
Plantation, masterfully told, reveals how a tender heart filled with overpowering love might indeed be as the wind--always a whisper of might in the long, long night.
