A 1932 runaway teenager finished high school while living alone on $3 a week. He entered law school at 17. On his own was tough enough, but death took his father and he became responsible for his widowed mother, two sisters and a dying brother. Struggling as family head, he worked his way through law school to become a 21-year old attorney. He tells of the many who helped along the way, a special one being Texas State Senator Harry Hertzberg who left his native San Antonio the unique, valuable Hertzberg Circus Museum.

About the Author:
Born near Olla LA, Duval considers himself a Texas "Shorthorn" as his father was a full Texas "Longhorn" born in Brownsboro TX. As told in his GREAT DEPRESSION AND A TEENAGER'S FIGHT TO SURVIVE, he came to San Antonio TX in 1932 as a hobo and by age 21 was a lawyer in the Law Offices of Harry Hertzberg, former state senator. In 1941, he entered the U. S. Army and became a CIC Special Agent, serving in Southern States two years, followed by two years in Australia, New Guinea, Bougainville, Luzon (Philippines) and at war's end in Kyoto, Japan. After discharge, he was an editor for Prentice-Hall, then joined the claim staff of the U.S.F.& G. Insurance Company for 25 years. He is now retired in Tucson AZ, with his wife.
Review:
"Duval also served as a technical editor/writer for Prentice-Hall and, in addition to his two-book Great Depression series, has written and published a history book titled SPY CATCHERS OF THE U.S. ARMY IN THE WAR WITH JAPAN and a national quarterly, "The Golden Sphinx," for CIC veterans. He was co-authoring a book with native Texan and fellow CIC agent, William A. Owens. Owens wrote BLACK MUTINY, the basis for the movie "Amistad." Their collaboration was cut short by Owens' final illness. -- The FORUM

"His account of what it took to survive in the 1930s is a valuable addition to a balanced view of the Great Depression." -- Robert Fulghum, author of ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN

"In the book we are treated to a series of problems, most of which the Senator is called upon to help solve, often by involving the experience and contacts of the Senator. It is basically a mentor relationship; however, this is a mentor who sometimes helps pay the bills (by putting Duval in situations where he could earn the needed money).

"We also have good examples of 'networking' that comes from the personal habits and character of the author: Duval's ability to make life-long friends of his co-workers and business contacts." -- Agent Report -- Winter 1999-2000
