After college, I received an officer's commission in the U.S. Navy and sailed the Pacific Ocean on tankers and repair ships. That valuable experience gained in deep-water navigation and seamanship skills was put to use again years later.
I earned my wings as an instrument-rated, private pilot and bought my first airplane. Every opportunity I had, I'd fly to the tropical islands of the Bahamas and often rent a sailboat to explore the secluded, coconut-lined, white, sandy beaches of the central islands - Abaco, Eleuthera, Exumas, Long Island and Cat Island.
My tenacious passion for the sea continued in retirement. I purchased a thirty-foot sloop and sailed it up and down the East Coast of the United States and to the islands of the Bahamas. Itching to do more serious, blue water cruising, I sailed with two others a thirty-six-foot ketch from the islands of the Caribbean to Europe.
This novel is fiction but the places mentioned and flying experiences are real ... the characters and events are not. I have a high degree of respect and love for the folks of the Bahamas. They're proud, honest people and truly live in a paradise unequaled anywhere in the world. Having been to and explored tranquil Cat Island, it seemed to be an intriguing setting for this tale.
