The face of racism in the United States is no longer the blatant hate that galvanized society to change in the 1960s and 1970s. Today's racism is a "Polite Apartheid" that denies people of color an equal opportunity to educate their children, keep them healthy and advance their families economically - oppression in the United States by a declining white majority that, in many cases, doesn't even realize how its actions are exclusionary or worse.

This hidden racism is particularly difficult to combat because people of color are often excluded from the chambers of influence where initiatives that might address this issue are conceived and deliberated.

That's why Lefkowith and Amato - two middle-aged white guys - offer six simple principles (inspired by the Sullivan Principles that helped topple Apartheid in South Africa) to fight racism in the 21st Century.

Their purpose in writing this book: to serve as a catalyst to help awaken and equip a new generation of activists dedicated to positive social change.

Their goal: to get corporations and complacent people with good hearts to see the hidden barriers that create a polite Apartheid, and inspire them to action.

Dave ("Lefty") Lefkowith and Nino Amato founded the Foundation to End Polite Apartheid (or FEPA) in 2001.

FEPA's first act - publishing the book "Today's Hidden Racism: A Polite Apartheid."

FEPA's goal is to serve as the catalyst that gets corporations and complacent people with good hearts to overcome the hidden barriers that create today's polite Apartheid.

About the Author:

Dave Lefkowith has enjoyed a varied career as an executive, a consultant, a "change agent," an entrepreneur and a speaker/trainer.

Dave - or "Lefty" as he's known to his friends - earned his BA from Yale University (summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and his MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business (as an Arjay Miller Scholar). Dave has worked for the past 20 years as a corporate consultant and change agent, specializing in organizational transformation, new product development and leadership development.

Dave lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.

Nino Amato is a successful business executive and respected social justice activist. He has served as a senior executive in both the health care and energy industries. Nino is a strategic marketing consultant, specializing in business development, governmental affairs, media relations and brand management.

As a community leader, Nino chaired the City of Madison's Task Force on Race Relations and is a member of the NAACP, LUChA and the Madison Urban League. Nino is on the Board of Directors of Common Cause of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Nino has been honored with the Rev. James C. Wright Humanitarian Award - City of Madison's Equal Opportunities Commission in July 2000 and the YWCA Racial Justice Award in April 2000.

Nino earned his BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Robert M. LaFollette Institute of Public Affairs.

Nino lives in Madison with his two daughters.
