The setting for this book happens to be a selection of natural areas in Northwest Michigan, but the message that I hope to convey fits a universal landscape. No matter where your home, if you have ever come upon a place virtually untouched by human hands, or at least relatively unharmed by them, and if you felt a sense of urgency upon making your discovery-- that you needed to share its magic, as well as protect it for years to come--then you will understand the sentiments of the narrator and her father in LOOK ABOUT YOU. At the beginning, the girl is very young, and not completely aware of her father's purpose in taking her on regular outdoor rambles. Thus, her father introduces the whimsy of fairies, sprites and gnomes to embody the spirit of each place. As she grows, she is able to better comprehend her father's message of preservation and stewardship. She understands how important it is for all people to have access to the wonder of wild places, and the possibility and promise of believing in magic and mystery far beyond childhood. Being so filled with gratitude for the place in which I was fortunate enough to grow up, I felt it only natural to pass on some of what the land has taught me, and to do my best in preserving its magnificence. I hope to encourage others to "Look About You" and discover what enchantment might be laying right at their own doorsteps.
