Named for both her grandfather and her father, Roberta Griffith (Robert with an "a") was raised to believe in herself and to develop all of her abilities, as was her older sister, Jane. Roberta has been acknowledged as an artist since childhood. At age 10, she painted a remarkably accomplished self-portrait, an early step in her journey of self-definition through art. Identifying with her family and their heritage of support, Roberta kept her original name throughout her life, even when she was married and raising two sons. Roberta entered the competitive male-dominated art world of the early 1960's armed with the independent spirit her parents had nourished.
