He told of her travels on he Santa Fe Trail and her adventures in the Southwest. Even as a child these adventures made history come alive for me. In my travels, from childhood to adulthood, Mamie and her stories have always been with me, and perhaps they seemed even more real to me because we were fortunate enough to have an old trunk filled with her treasured memories. Like Mamie, her journals and loving remembrances have traveled many miles over the last six generation of our Aguirre family. Among the treasures she saved for us was a christening gown that was made for her first born, my grandfather, who was also named Pedro Joab Aguirre. This wonderful gown was first worn in Mesilla, New Mexico, in 1864, and was recently worn in Mesa, Arizona, by Mamie's great-great-great-granddaughter when she was baptized. Over the years I have enjoyed sharing Mamie's adventures with family and friends. It pleased me whenever I found articles about Mamie in newspapers, books and historical reviews. Yet none of these bits and pieces had been put together to tell Mamie's full story until Journey of The Heart was written. In Mamie's journal she tells us, "I have been a traveler all of my life." How appropriate it is that author Annette Gray, another traveler, should find these bits and pieces of Mamie's story and, with much research added, weave them together to make history come alive for the reader.
