No, the year is not 2002, and the shootings are not the work of the so-called Beltway Snipers. The crimes described in The Susan B. Anthony Shootings take place in the early 1990’s, and although the shootings are eerily similar in some respects to the real life ones carried out more than 10 years later, there are substantial differences.
For one thing, all of the victims are white males, and each shooting is preceded by a note—in the form of a puzzle—mailed to local police and the newspaper. To add to the mystery, each note is accompanied by a Susan B. Anthony dollar.
After reviewing the crime scenes and the notes, Metropolitan Police Detective Charlie Snider and his partner, Johnny Lucas, begin to zero-in on a suspect—a woman who heads a militant woman's organization called the Susan B. Anthony Society. Before they can develop sufficient evidence linking her or any other member of the organization to the shootings, Laura Brady, a reporter for the Washington Sun —and a close friend of Charlie's— discovers that one of the victims was in line to inherit several million dollars. Could this be mere coincidence?
Follow the twists and turns of the investigation as Charlie, Johnny and Laura use their knowledge of history and skill in solving puzzles to unravel the meaning of the messages and to broaden and then narrow their list of suspects.
If you are an American history buff, or if you like to solve puzzles, The Susan B. Anthony Shootings is a mystery for you.
