CHAPTER 1 GETTING NOTICED

Picture this. You’re standing in the middle of a mall and you start to sing obnoxiously loud for at least fifteen minutes. You cause a scene and are led away by mall security. You are definitely noticed but what is your purpose? Are you trying to promote your new CD? Get a record deal? Or go to jail? Publicity is the art of getting noticed. Getting noticed, by the right audience or public at the right time. It is a process that requires specific planning, detailing, and excellent follow-up skills.

A more subtle and professional approach to getting noticed is to open your mouth and let people know who you are, what you have to offer, and especially how they will benefit. I’ve always found networking to be key in spreading the word. Conferences, seminars and mixers are the best platforms, but you must come prepared. Always have a business card and a thirty-second pitch to sell yourself to anyone who may ask, "So what do you do?" If you are prepared in advance you’re guaranteed to make a lasting impression. Be sure to keep your friends and family abreast of your goals. If you’re looking for exposure let it be known. If you’re having an art show or performance make sure they spread the word. You can always count on people talking. Eventually someone you may have told, about your product or service, will tell the right person and voila! You’re on your way. You get a phone call from someone inquiring about your services. Don’t be afraid. This is it! This is the opportunity to use your thirty-second sell. Sell yourself to the caller. Make them comfortable, get them to open up and most of all get them to say yes, at least to a meeting.

Positioning, selling yourself or getting noticed is a full-time commitment that brings major results if done correctly. The drawbacks? There are none unless you don’t try. The benefits are plenty. But if you don’t tell the world what you have to offer, at least your friends and family to start, no one else will.

Remember the saying "nothing from nothing leaves nothing?" Well, take heed because while you’re sitting at home wondering how you will launch your publicity campaign, there are thousands of assertive people pushing you further down the ladder of success.

This book is an ingredient to becoming a successful "DIY" publicist. Now get going and make me proud!
