About the Author:
Guy Matthews loves all things nautical. Born and raised on the south Texas waterfront, since he was 13 he has owned many boats-the last ten all been named Quite Nice. Founder of one of the world's most prominent energy/marine surveying and adjusting companies, one time underwriting member of Lloyds of London, Guy has spent a lifetime in the marine business. But in 1984, distressed with the excess and myopia of modern business, Guy and his wife Jeri sailed away to the Caribbean (on a Quite Nice of course), convinced that man should live life o the fullest and not be obsessed by society's focus on security and wealth. Now Guy is back in work mode. In fact, he claims to be the world's oldest working marine insurance adjuster (though his age is a closesly guarded secret). Drawing upon all that experience, Guy has written a number of nonfiction articles for Caribbean Compass magazine, and on his own he has recently published the Yacht Owner's Guide to Marine Insurance. Sundowner Stories is his first full length fiction collection.
Review:
What Zane Grey did for stories once told around the campfire, Guy Matthews does for the modern sailor's cockpit tales. He's picked some of the best and fictionalized them, so now you don't need to be on a sloop in the Grenadines with a sundowner in hand (although you might yearn to be!) to enjoy the spinning of these amusing yarns. --Sally Erdle, Editor, Caribbean Compass
The earthly sophistication that permeates the telling of this collection of stories makes it a more than enjoyable read. For example, the quixotic adventures of Watson Swift and his submissive yet opportunistic wife, Wanda Sue, are made even more enjoyable by the Runyonesc style in which Guy Matthews describes their plans and plights. I imagine the guy (Guy) could write serious stuff but the witty manner in which he potrays the world of the yachtsman is enough to almost make you burst out laughing if for no other reason than the sheer artistry of the way he expresses himself. --Robert Carson, Author, Blowout
