About the Author:
About the author: Smokie Brannaman grew up on a 5000-acre horse and cattle ranch in Southwestern Montana. Working with horses, cattle and rodeoing as a professional trick roper was his way of life as a youngster. Upon graduating from high school, Smokie chose to serve his country in the United State Coast Guard. Although his military duties did not always allow much time to spend with his horses, he never the less, rode and trained horses of his own and others throughout his military career. Smokie retired in 2000 from the Coast Guard and worked as a Corporate Operations Manager for a security company. But he soon realized that his true enjoyment came from being around horses, training, riding and helping others with their horses. After working for 2 years as a stable manager for a large boarding stable, Smokie hired on at Ots Sunrise Farm to work with the young horses halter breaking, ground work and starting horses under saddle to progress to more advanced training. Smokie utilizes the training methods of his brother Buck Brannaman, Jeff Griffith, Clinton Anderson and others, as well as his own techniques learned during a lifetime of working with horses. Smokie lives in Greenleaf Wisconsin with his sweetie Vickie and has three grown children, Kat, Travis and Jason. He raises and trains registered quarter horses of his own, which he uses as, Cavalry horses for his hobby, Civil War reenacting and in Wild West shows throughout the Midwest.
Review:
All to often, author Smokie Brannaman writes, he's seen what he calls a Black Beauty fantasy that ends up in broken bones, broken dreams, broken bank accounts and unbroken or ruined horses. To keep such scenarios from recurring when a wannabe rider steps up to horse ownership, Brannaman wrote Whisper This..., his brief, common-sence book on horse ownership, which he describes as a no bull book for horse and rider. Did I mention the author is blunt and plainspoken? Readers looking for the fantasy horse experience probably will not appreciate all of Brannaman's opinions: said opinions might hit too close to home. However, other riders likely will wish their nerve and forthrightness was on par with the author's. And, yes, Brannaman is the not-so-rich-and-famous brother of one of the finest clinicians and horsemen in the country, if not the world. --Bunkhouse Review 2007 --Western Horseman Magazine Oct 2007
GRADE AAAAAAAAA EXCELLENT +++++++ This book will be required reading for anyone coming to my barn for training! --Feather Run Saddle Horse Farm, --Dusty Roades
Written by horse trainer Smokie Brannaman, Whisper This ... Not to Your Horse to Yourself: A No Bull$#it Book For You and Your Horse is a straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is guide for anyone considering owning a horse, and especially for prospective first-time horse buyers. Chapters discuss what to look for in a good horse, how to tell if one is really ready to be a horse owner, care and feeding of horses, the good/bad/ugly about clinics, and much more. An older well-broke horse doesn't need riding every day to stay in shape or remain a well-broke horse. But once a month won't work either. I'd ride at least twice a week if I could and three would be better. An honest, practical-minded guide offering the benefit of a lifetime of horse experience, enthusiastically recommended !
