This first book of a two-volume set of reference books is the most complete work regarding the decorations a soldier of the German Wehrmacht could be awarded. On over 440 pages with over 800 pictures mainly in full color you will find the histories, the regulations, the variations, the makers, the documents and much more information about each award and decoration of the Heer. This much needed book closes a gap between the earlier reference books and the current monographs. It will provide the starting as well as the advanced collector with all the information about each of the discussed orders and badges in a comprehensive depth and completeness. Another standard reference work offered to you in the usual excellent quality in make and content by B & D Publishing. The Awards of the Heer is a unique book! The two-volume work is the first effort dedicated exclusively to cataloging the orders and decorations which could be earned by a soldier in the German Army during World War II. The first volume covers such general military awards as the Order of the Iron Cross, the War Merit Cross, and the Ostmedaille, as well as the Close Combat Clasp, the Panzer Assault Badge, and the Army Flak Badge and much more. In addition to the decorations themselves, award procedures, documents and cases are also presented in a comprehensive manner. Photographs of the awards in wear round each presentation. Whether you are a novice or experienced collector, your interests are general or specific, or if you have an interest in the German Army during the Second World War, this book deserves a place on your library shelf. Over 440 pages with over 750 pictures in full color.

Review:
The Awards of the Heer, Vol. I, provides a complete overview of the history, requirements, awards, manufacturers, packaging and award documents for most of the medals and badges a German soldier could earn through service and valor in the Second World War. Volume II promises to complete the coverage. Those familiar with the work of Deitrich Maerz and his publishing company B&D Publishing LLC will find the same attractive layout featuring detailed full color photos complimented by period black and white photos and illustrations. Listings of the recognized war-time manufacturers of each of the grades of each award covered: all grades of the Iron Cross, the Honor Roll Clasp, the War Merit Cross, the German Cross, the Wound badge, the various Assault Badges, and the Eastern Front Medal. Plus coverage is provided for some obscure and rare badges like the Sniper Badges, the Tank Destruction Badge, the Aircraft Destruction Badge, and the Balloon Observer Badge. These rare badges are discussed to educate the collector of their actual manufacture and awarding, their reproductions and what to look for reguarding each badge. I would recommend buying this single book rather than the series of German award and badge books now being offered by Schiffer Publishing; you will get better and more detailed coverage and photos without the poor translation and errors of these small books. The coverage of the Sniper Badge, for example, is better and more succinct about the award than the Schiffer book without showing reproductions. The depth of coverage for each award is condensed when compaired to the specialized book B&D publishes on each specific award, e.g. the Knight's Cross. The book surpasses any prior overview on the subject without becoming mired in the depth of detail now available on these awards. I find the charts listing the known war-time manufactures for each award and grade highly valuable. The authors and publisher are to be congratulated for their continuing dedication to educating and sharing the vast database on these awards with collectors and historians. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering entering the field of World War II German Army Combat Awards, and to those already collecting and studying these pieces of history the individual German Soldier valued so highly and suffered so much to earn. --Scot T. Grossnicklaus

Apart from the branch color system of identifying one's individual branch or arm of service, the many items of insignia worn by the German Army officer or soldier also included national emblems, unit identifiers, badges of rank, awards of merit, badges for professional skills and specialization, battle insignia, campaign shields and cuff titles, medals, decorations, and special items of insignia. Hitler, himself a former soldier and recipient of both the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, knew very well the positive impact that such visible indicators of unit identity and individual merit or heroism invariably had upon military morale. Although the issue or award of individual insignia items was extensive, the criteria governing these awards were formally laid down and strictly applied. Consequently, they had enormous resonance and value in the German Army and engendered huge pride in those who were awarded them, while at the same time spurring others to emulate their achievements. Many German Army officers and soldiers were awarded decorations and awards for service during World War I, and these were worn by any senior officers, reserve officers, and long-serving soldiers during the 1933-1945 period. During World War II, the principal medals and decorations insttuted and awarded to Army personnel were the Iron Cross 1939 in 2nd and 1st Class, 1939 bars to the 1914 Iron Cross 1st or 2nd Class, the War Service Cross in 1st and 2nd Class, and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded in five grades or levels. In a new book entitled THE AWARDS OF THE HEER-VOLUME 1, authors Dietrich Maerz and Bernd Hartmann expertly catalog the orders and decorations of the German Army during World War II. This first volume covers the following: A. The Orders of the German Wehrmacht 1. The Order of the Iron Cross 2. Honor Roll Clasp of the Army 3. The Order of the War Merit Cross 4. The Order of the German Cross B. The Wound Badge C. The War Badge of the German Army 6. The Infantry Assault Badge 7. The Close Combat Clasp 8. The Panzer Assault Badge 9. The General Assault Badge 10. The Anti-Partisan Badge 11. The Tank Destruction Badge 12. The Aircraft Destruction Badge 13. The Army Flak Badge 14. The Sniper Badge 15. The Balloon Observer Badge 16. The Army Paratrooper Badge D. The East Medal This book contains over 750 detailed color photographs of not only decorations awarded but also the award procedures, documents, and cases as well. The attention to detail and the research that went into this book clearly shows both authors dedication to a much overlooked subject. This book has been expanded, updated, and translated from the original German version. Even though the cost may deter you from purchasing this book as well as the future Volume 2; don't let that prevent you from getting both volumes. --Lt. Colonel Robert A. Lynn

A Mercedes-Benz of a book, filled with many colorful photo illustrations accompanied by expert text. In my twenty-three years in the book business, the books by B & D publishing are the ONLY ones no one has ever been able to point out a mistake ! --Lance Frickensmith
