In this compelling story of a young Quinnipiac brave named Blackbird, award-winning author Jason Marchi and painter Jesse Bonelli have teamed up to capture the magic and history of a time before our own. Through young Blackbird's eyes we learn the Quinnipiac tribal legend of how the Sleeping Giant landform in Hamden, Connecticut came to look like a giant man sleeping on his back. The story, brought to life with 14 fine art oil paintings, gives us a renewed appreciation of the natural world and shows young readers how Native Americans lived close to the earth and respected the land, air, water, and wildlife The Legend of Hobbomock: The Sleeping Giant is most decidedly a story worth imparting to our children today; a thrilling story the promotes appreciation for the natural world, history, and folklore.

A young Quinnipiac Indian brave must stop an angry stone giant from destroying his village and his people. Based on a Native American legend about how a set of hills in Hamden, Connecticut came to look like a giant man sleeping on his back. The story promotes appreciation for the natural world and gets kids excited about studying Native American history, which is part of the elementary level core curriculum in the 3rd and 4th grades across the nation.

The book, along with an 83 page Teaching/Fun Guide and audio book version are adopted as an educational package by elementary schools to fit the Core Curriculum standards for Native American studies in the 3rd and 4th grades. The book is also used in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades as part of an expanded curriculum.
From the Inside Flap:
When Blackbird was a boy he heard the ancient stories about Hobbomock, a stone giant that roamed the land of his Quinnipiac ancestors and taught them how to fish, hunt, and care for the land.
But legend had it that Hobbomock grew very angry when he'd found the Quinnipiacs no longer spoke the same language as the animals in the forest and the birds in the sky and thus no longer respected the earth.
In his anger Hobbomock stormed off in his stone canoe, threatening to return one day to punish the Quinnipiacs.
A few years later, when Blackbird is old enough to hunt in the forest on his own, Hobbomock makes an unexpected return and he's mighty angry--as legend foretold.
Now Blackbird must find a way to stop Hobbomock from destroying his people.
Jason Marchi weaves an exciting story that promotes appreciation for the natural world in this retelling of a Native American legend that explains how a set of hills in Connecticut came to look like a giant man sleeping on his back.
