From the Author:
The Growing Sweater is based on a partly true story. One autumn day in 1990 my mother told me that before I was born she knitted a sweater for my father. Every time she washed and dried the sweater it grew! Sweaters usually shrink, but sometimes they stretch and grow larger. I was instantly fascinated with the idea of a growing sweater, and soon after I started to write the story, but it took several years of writing and rewriting to get the story just right. It was my first book for children after all, and learning to write children's books well is NOT easy. There are many basic but very important rules that must be followed when writing books for young readers. And learning to write well in general is usually a long process for most writers. The end result is well worth the effort, however, especially when young readers (AND their parents) are delighted by a good story.
In 1993, while The Growing Sweater was still in manuscript form, it won co-first place in a Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators sponsored contest at a New England-based university writing conference. Then, in 2006, while still in manuscript form, The Growing Sweater was a finalist in the Tassy Walden Awards: New Voices in Children's Literature. The story was first published in a Braille anthology of children's stories in 2007. Less than a year after its publication as a fully illustrated, hard cover picture storybook in 2014, The Growing Sweater became a Mom's Choice Awards Silver Recipient and won First Place in the National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest for Children's Books .
