Pearl of Wisdom Book 2 is for people who have already entered into practice. Although some of the practices here are deity practices, people who have not yet received empowerment may do them. However, it is advisable to do them under the instruction of a teacher. If you simply pick up this book to try it out for yourself, you will not understand the practices and their purpose. To this edition we have added three practices that are good to recite to help the deceased: the Meditation on Amitabha Buddha, Prayer to Be Reborn in the Land of Bliss, and The King of Prayers. For people who are ill, doing the practices of Medicine Buddha, White Tara and Amitabha Buddha are helpful. The Chenrezig Meditation is especially inspiring when you want to awaken compassion and the Meditation on Arya Tara is helpful when facing obstacles and difficulties. Doing the Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga before engaging in Dharma study will increase wisdom and enhance your ability to understand. Of course, reciting the prayers and practicing the meditations benefit and inspire us at other times as well!

About the Author:
Born in 1950, Venerable Thubten Chodron grew up near Los Angeles. She graduated with a B.A. in History from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1971. After traveling through Europe, North Africa and Asia for one and a half years, she received a teaching credential and went to the University of Southern California to do post-graduate work in Education while working as a teacher in the Los Angeles City School System. In 1975, she attended a meditation course given by Venerable Lama Yeshe and Venerable Zopa Rinpoche, and subsequently went to Kopan Monastery in Nepal to continue to study and practice Buddha s teachings. In 1977 she was ordained as a Buddhist nun by Kyabje Ling Rinpoche in Dharamsala, India, and in 1986 she received bhikshuni (full) ordination in Taiwan. Venerable Thubten Chodron travels worldwide to teach the Dharma: North America, Latin America, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and the former Soviet countries. Seeing the importance and necessity of a monastery for Westerners training in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, she founded Sravasti Abbey , a Buddhist monastic community in Washington State, USA, and is currently the abbess there.
