THE real object of all which we have described, with its various activities, is, after all, to be found in the outlying missions, or work among the very poor and degraded of the overcrowded Metropolis. There are twenty of these missions scattered within the radius of the darkest districts of London. At the beginning of the present year there were no fewer than 100,000 of these poor continually and regularly visited by eighty or more of the deaconesses already referred to. These women not only go from house to house, but among the crowded tenements from room to room, carrying the Gospel to those who otherwise would not hear it, and ministering to the wants of soul and body. In almost every instance they are gladly welcomed. During the severity of winter, when so many avenues of labour are closed, many must have died of want had it not been for the bread and coal tickets distributed by the Mildmay deaconesses and other Christian people. Each deaconess is allowed monthly a certain amount of relief, to be used in such ways as seem best suited to the emergency. The sum depends largely upon the generosity of such people as are interested in this work, and who send money and clothing to Mildmay. Often a special gift comes at just the right time, and in answer to prayer. An accurate account of all moneys received and expended is kept, and the books are examined each month. The cases are very carefully looked up by the deaconess in charge before expending the money. There is usually a wise discrimination exercised in its distribution. A mission is planted in a parish at the request of the vicar of that parish, if there are workers enough to enter upon it.
