"It would be useless to fill up my paper by telling you why I have not written before. I will only mention one reason, and that is the feeling of my total unfitness to write to you in your dire sorrow, because I cannot place my spirit in the position of yours and enter into your feelings. I cannot imagine how I should feel had I lost a beloved child unexpectedly, by a dreadful accident. What would be the utterances of Nature, Flesh and Grace under such circumstances? I know not. The language of the 'old man' would, I believe, be very different from that of the 'new.i The one would ask 'Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God and die.' But Grace would reply, 'Thou speakest as one of the foolish speaketh! What! Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.' 'Yes,' says the Flesh, 'but why hath the Lord dealt thus with us?' 'That I know not,' Grace replies, 'but one thing I know, He hath done all things well.' The 'old man' murmurs, "Behold this evil is of the Lord, what should I wait for the Lord any longer?" "Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed mine hands in inno. cency, for all the day long have I been plagued and chastened every morning." "My way is hid from the Lord and my judgment is passed over from my God."
