Not illustrated. 1878 Excerpt: ...a mean depth of 2 feet 3 inches, was completely drained, in ninety-six hours.' A four-horse-power portable steam engine is said to discharge 70,000 gallons per hour, at a height of 17 feet: sufficient water to supply one inch, over 37 acres, if it could be equally distributed. It is further said, that, by increasing the power to suit the extended apparatus, water may be raised to any height, in the proportion of 1,000 gallons per hour, at 210 feet, for every one-horse-power. Of course any other-available power may be used. There are no doubt many tracts on which that or other means of irrigation could be profitably applied, after the plant is fully naturalized, and we know its habits and wants; but the most part of the available land of Ceylon, at an elevation of less than 1,000 feet, must depend on the clerk of the weather. There has never been a plant introduced into the island that can compare in value with Iiberian coffee, if it only turns out to yield even two pounds a tree, on trees 10 x 10 feet. G 435 to the acre. It would suit all ranks, from the European capitalist to the native villager; it will be planted in tracts of 200 or 300 acres, and in patches of half-a-rood. The man who has more brains than capital and more industry thau credit may cultivate his few acres, and in a few years achieve independence; the small capitalist may, by high cultivation, and liberal manuring, take his B,. 10,000 worth of coffee off his ten-acre field; and those who have no land, and no money, may soon save enough from their wages to become small proprietors. We must not indeed expect any sudden improvement in the character and habits of the people, but a new field and a wide one, for the exercise of industry and enterprise, must gradually increase intelligence, with ...
