It will be seen in this memoir to what causes he attributed his great success at the Bar. It was certainly not owing to patronage or favour, but chiefly to his own ability and acute ness, his untiring industry, the liberal education he had received, and his unsparing labour to acquire a thorough mastery of his profession. No one, I believe, among the bar risters of his day, showed greater learning at Common Law or obtained more influence with judges and juries in the Courts in which he practised. Very few have Shown the tact and talent he always displayed. He possessed some personal advantages which rendered these powers more effective. A fine intelligent countenance, the tone and bearing of a gentle man, combined with energy and animation. He rarely in dulged in declamation, but, avoiding exaggeration, addressed himself rather to the reason and judgment than to the passions and prejudices of his audience. The result of which was that the Bench, the Bar, and the public felt they had to deal with an honourable man who inspired confidence by his truth and honesty.
