Excerpt from Proceedings of a Convention of Delegates From the Citizens of Pennsylvania: Opposed to Executive Usurpation and Abuse, Which Assembled at Harrisburg, May 27, 1834
Resolved, That in taking these steps a few weeks before the meeting of a new Congress, recently elected by the people, and clothed With the authority of the people, so that he might thereby be enabled to interpose his veto power, and frustrate the intentions Of the representatives Of the people, unless two thirds of both houses should concur - he was guilty Ofa violent encroachment upon the rights of the people, as they were intended to be secured by the Constitution.
Resolved, That in assigning as a reason for this encroachment, that a major ity in Congress might be, and probably would be, bribed or corrupted, he was guilty of an unwarrantable assault upon the character of the representatives Of the people, an unjust and latal disparagement of the representative system. And a destructive outrage upon the whole scheme of our government; amount ing in fact, to an assertion, that there was no virtue but in the government of a single man, or what is properly denominated an absolute despotism.
