Según las opiniones más recientes y que gozan de mayor auto ridad, las letras de este alfabeto son derivadas del antiguo alfabeto fenicio y del griego arcaico; siendo conocidas en el Mediodía de España desde tiempo inmemorial, y habiéndose generalizado du rante la segunda guerra púnica por el centro y Norte de España. Atendido el origen de esta escritura, no tiene nada de extraño que la generalidad de las leyendas que aparecen en las monedas más antiguas carezcan casi por completo de vocales, así como las más modernas, especialmente las de época celtíbero-latina, apenas dejan de tenerlas.
