In the introduction, we try to set her work into the context of her contemporaries in the art; for some years she had very few competitors other than Alice C. Morse and Mrs. Henry Whitman. Will Bradley designed his first pamphlet cover for Harriet Monroe, The Columbian Ode, in 1893, and his first book cover in 1894 for Tom Hall, When Hearts are Trumps. Frank Hazenplug's first cover work dates from late 1894, we believe, but perhaps from early 1895. There were older artists working in the field, George Wharton Edwards and Louis J.
