Con el objeto de llenar en cuanto nos sea dable este vacío, y sin mas apoyo que nuestro propio entusiasmo, recorrimos hace años una buena parte del Perú, y despues todas las principales biblio tecas y algunos archivos célebres de Europa, en busca de cuantos documentos pudiesen referirse a la historia de nuestra infortuna da patria. A costa de grandes sacrificios pudimos acopiar una no pequeña coleccion de manuscritos, preciosos inéditos; y si tuvimos que renunciar a la adquisicion de otros tesoros históricos, fué por que nuestros recursos limitados no nos lo permitieron. Por lo menos nos ha sido dado explorar las abundantes minas que ocul tan algunos archivos, y apreciar su relativa importancia, por lo que con los datos que hoy poseemos nos seria facil explotarlos el dia que hubiese elementos para ello.
