Les élec tions générales approchant, les moines se découvrirent. Non qu'ils perdissent patience. La patience n'échappe-jamais aux religieux. Mais ils rejetèrent toute prudence comme un bagage embarrassant et se lancèrent furieu sement dans la lutte politique. Toute la mi lice romaine donna. Les congrégations non autorisées, se sentant les plus libres, agirent le plus audacieusement. Leur action était préparée de longue main. On retrouve dans toutes les choses ecclésiastiques la constance et la suite. Pour conquérir la domination temporelle en France, l'eglise préférait, de puis quelques années, les corps francs, les congrégations non reconnues. Et la multitude de celles-ci augmentait sans cesse dans la France envahie.

About the Author:
Anatole France (pseudonym of Jacques Anatol Thibault, 1844- 1924) was the most prominent French man of letters of his time. France's style was precise, elegant, gentle, ironic, and humorous. He was elected to the French Academy, and in 1921 was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Some of his other works include The Aspirations of Jean Servien, The Revolt of the Angels, and Penguin Island.
