About the Author:
A household name thanks to popular TV series that include The Human Body, which won three baftas, Superhuman, Walking with Cavemen and The Human Mind, Lord Winston's pioneering work in the field of human fertility helped thousands of childless couples have "miracle babies" and earned him an outstanding international reputation. A winner of the Royal Society's prestigious Michael Faraday Gold Award, he was made a life peer in 1995. He is Emiritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London, and an active researcher in reproductive physiology.
Review:
With big, bold collages comprised of photographs, shifting text sizes and fonts, and all manner of quirky scientific presentations, this is a very compelling look at Darwin, the work of other naturalists and their work. . Winston discusses why some animals are born with reduced pigment and how similar animals evolve differently in different locations. Subjects as diverse as Gregor Mendel s pea plant experiments to the evolution of bee colonies is explored on vividly colored double-page spreads that draw the reader in with irresistible graphics and slowly, unpretentiously, lead the curious along a grand scientific story. DK continues to impress me with their 21st century design that has transformed the encyclopedia format. Winston is a perfect partner for this study on evolution that concludes in the modern era and brings Darwin and his research into our everyday lives. I can t recommend Evolution Revolution enough as the book for kids studying Darwin and an excellent supplement to the dreariness of the average earth science classroom. Well done! --Bookslut.com
Browsers will enjoy dipping in and out, but the book reads surprisingly well straight through, and readers who devour it whole will learn a great deal. --School Library Journal
