The first of four novellas, which together were published in Old New York, set in the mid-1800s

Lewis Raycie is sent on a Grand Tour of Europe with instructions from his father to acquire a collection of accepted art works. His father's dream is to own a Raphael; instead, Lewis returns with a priceless collection of Renaissance masterpieces by Piero della Francesca and others of equal stature. They are, however, unknown in America.

His father is appalled and disinherits him. His family ridicules him. But it is only after Lewis dies that the magnificent collection gets the recognition it really deserves.

This novel is part of Brilliance Audio's extensive Classic Collection, bringing you timeless masterpieces that you and your family are sure to love.

About the Author:
Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was raised in New York City in a socially prominent family. She wrote the novels The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, Old New York, The Old Maid, and The House of Mirth.
From AudioFile:
This audio novella is a gem. The force and precision of Wharton's language are brought vividly to life by Jacobi, an actor whose beautiful voice you recognize only for an instant before you both submerge in the story. Wharton doesn't waste a word, or even a pause, and I had to hear the first cassette twice before I understood exactly who was doing what to whom. Which is not a criticism, since I relished the second listening as I had the first. The wrenching conclusion will break your heart and then clear your head. Edith Wharton died in 1937, but this classic is evergreen. B.H.C. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
