"Boyle, Matthews, and Saklofske gathered an impressive array of contributors for this handbook. Their first assumption, stated on very first page, is that "most researchers in the area share a set of common core beliefs supported by empirical evidence." This is such an amazing turnaround from Walter Mischel′s critique of personality psychology in his Personality and Assessment (1968). It is clear from this handbook that personality psychology does not have a clear, unifying theme. The editors and contributors make the case (whether intentionally or not) that this has much more to do with the subject matter--human personality--than with any weakness in the field or its practitioners. The claim that researchers in personality psychology share a set of common beliefs and that empirical evidence supports these beliefs is worth exploring, and the contributors do a solid job of this. Volume 1 outlines major theories of personality (including newer areas of interest such as psychobiology and self-regulation), and volume 2 thoroughly critiques and analyzes a broad range of measurement instruments and methodological approaches in the study of personality psychology. This is a very important handbook for those currently working in personality psychology or planning to pursue a career in the field. Summing Up: Essential. Graduate students, researchers, and professionals."
