The author and I met in the summer of 1973 in a small neighborhood in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti. A good soccer player, he always showed respect for his teammates. In the field he was a captain of responsibility and leadership. As he grew, he had been through difficult times, but he always stayed strong. For him, adversity was a test. After his graduation from high school, the author attended the State University of Haiti. As the political and socio-economic situations in Haiti started to deteriorate, the author and I were forced to leave the country. After immigrating to the United States, we have been through some hard times and faced many challenges adapting to a country with a different language and culture. Over the years, as we struggled to adapt to the system and the cultural diversity of New York City, we started to grasp the many opportunities this great country has to offer. During his years of study at Brooklyn College, the author was a responsible student, a friend, and an engaged citizen who fought for the restoration of democracy in his country. In the United States as well as in meetings with officials of Haiti, he always advocated for social, political, and economic change in his country. In his effort to offer objective material to the academic world, the author tries to achieve what his goal will always be: to help the world form a better view of his country and its political systems. -Maxo Louis
