About the Author:

Helen Weinland served as a Foreign Service officer in the United States Department of State for twenty years, from 1974 to 1994. During that time, she was assigned overseas to Zurich, Lagos, Prague, Kigali, Berlin, and Kaduna. She also held assignments in Washington, D.C., from time to time. Prior to her entry in the Foreign Service, We in land taught history at Indiana University as a teaching assistant and as an instructor at Ohio State University. She was educated at Mount Holyoke College, Edinburgh University and Indiana University, where she worked as a graduate student assistant on the staff of Victorian Studies. Since her retirement from the Foreign Service, Weinland has divided her life equally between the coast of Maine and Boston.
