About the Author:

I was born in Burton on Trent in 1965. My father worked down the pit and was killed at the tender age of twenty two when the pit collapsed on him and a number of his colleagues. I was three. It was very hard on my mother she must have just been 21 or 22 at the time, very young to be left with two energetic young boys. Sometime in the next year or so she met another man who was good enough to adopt us two young boys and we all set out on ¿10 tickets to seek our fortunes in Australia. We settled in a district just outside of Perth, suppose I was too young at the time to realise what had happened an me an my brother set about joining new schools with natural enthusiasm. Our highlight of our trip was travelling the 3000miles to Sidney by car. It took us seven days and I remember the trailer breaking and we had to go a hundred miles back to the nearest garage. We were to stay in Australia for four years returning to these shores in the winter of 1972. I knew it was winter because it was so cold and I'd never really seen snow before. We stayed at my Grans in Horninglow in Burton. My gran was Indian so we lived on what I thought was yellow potatoes. Know I now that they were flavoured and tainted with curry powder. I always wondered how she got them to be yellow. My grandad was the Registrar and worked in a fancy office in the Town Hall. He was always strict and frightened me as a child. I never new to this day that apparently I was his favourite. We moved houses lots of times between then and me leaving school, I was an still am convinced that my mother has some Romany blood in her....
