FINDERS, KEEPERS, LOSERS, WEEPERS is richer, darker, and more hard-boiled than any of bestselling author Robert S. Levinson's ten previous novels. Characters come and go in a struggle to find love, success or survival in the music business, where backstabbing is an art limited only by the number of available backs.
Indianapolis. 1989.
International rock idol Nat Axelrod is imprisoned on a trumped-up rape charge. Nine years later, believed dead and all but forgotten, he emerges a revenge-driven cripple. Embarked on a hunt for the teenage beauty forced to tell the lies that put Nat behind bars, he is pursued by Laurent Connart, an unscrupulous, conflicted French tabloid journalist, and by his onetime champion, Danny Manings, a failed record-company executive seeking personal and professional redemption.

From Booklist:
The opening chapters here are violent and nasty, and that may be why it’s so hard to stop reading them. A rock star is caught in bed with a groupie, and the girl’s father bursts in and shoots him. The cops stand grinning as the girl’s father tears up “this long-haired, furry-faced fag bastard.” After a bogus trial, the wounded boy, who doesn’t seem to be a bad sort, really, is carted off to prison. Where he is mutilated. And murdered. Maybe. A female tabloid reporter hears he may be alive. She’s on the case. So are we. So far so good. But then the book becomes a different novel, an insider look at today’s music business, and how many bros and homies a reader can take is going to be subjective, man. The reporter fellates a sweaty, smelly prison official for inside information, and the amped-up prose suddenly becomes tiring. The reader has had enough of the characters well before the novel ends. The author is a greatly talented writer, but this effort sorely needs editing. --Don Crinklaw
