This is an *ABRIDGED* reading of Les Miserables. It is read by Christopher Cazenove and it is part of the 'Classics Read by Celebrities' audiobook series.

Victor Hugo's masterpiece of adventure, rebellion, and human redemption burst onto the French literary scene in 1862. It remains a classic of political upheaval and social oppression, as experience by individuals whose life-and-death struggles touch our hearts.

Christopher Cazenove's reading brings to life such memorable characters as the saintly Bishop, the orphaned Cosette, and Jean Valjean, the former convict who struggles to escape his past and reaffirm his humanity.

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

Hugo describes early nineteenth-century France with a sweeping power that gives his novel epic stature. Among the most famous chapters are the account of the battle of Waterloo and Valjean's flight through the Paris sewers.

This is an abridged version of the compelling novel that shook the literary world.
