Five years ago, Melissa Akali volunteered to assist her daughter's 6th grade basketball team by becoming the team mom. New to organized basketball, she immersed herself in learning the inner workings of the game itself as well as the various administrative functions required to create and maintain a team. Akali found that there were limited resources relating to the administrative functions of organized school basketball, so she began to create standardized forms and newsletters to ensure the safety of student athletes and the integrity of the coaching staff within her organization. Five years later, Melissa co-authored a handbook for team parents to provide help and guidance in navigating through the requirements of this position. Edward E. Welch Jr. has been coaching organized basketball for more than 11 years. Welch started as an assistant coach and after learning the role of an assistant coach, Welch was asked to become a head coach for a team that was just added. Welch's mentor stated that the roles he accomplished as an assistant coach had not been taken care of in the past. This moved Welch to compile items that he used to as an assistant coach in preparation for this book. Welch's experience ranges from recreation leagues, middle-school programs and travel teams which include YBOA, AAU and BCI. He has been very successful over the years winning various local, state tournaments and placements for national championships. Welch has felt that a handbook on becoming a successful assistant coach was needed. He wanted to share his years and levels of experience in coaching with other future and current coaches to give them tips and guidance from his perspective.
