“courageous, heartfelt and unforgettable” - Wally Lamb
“the characters become so alive, reading this book is like watching a movie.” - J. Cameron, playwright, performer and book reviewer
Simone is a popular, but troubled white middle class teacher who cuts herself. She flees from the uneducated, severely depressed patients in her inner-city treatment program, but is forced to return because "Oakhell" is the only facility she can afford. There, she meets Satch, a working-class black woman who scoffs at Simone's denial and cheerful demeanor. In the weeks that follow, Simone and Satch are thrown together both inside and outside of the hospital. Their tumultuous friendship becomes crucial to both women's quests to uncover the truths that propel them toward self-destruction. Alternately heart-wrenching and funny, Edgewise is a timely story of love, abuse and the hope of redemption.
“a story of humanity and how strength can come from many sources, including those we supposedly hate” Midwest Book Review
“lots of humor that pops in at unexpected moments” – Mike Karpa, book reviewer
“not sure literature can get any better” – Mary Patrick Kavanaugh, author & reviewer

About the Author:
Jan Stites has been a screenwriter, a screenwriting instructor, a waitress, a secretary, a middle school teacher in both inner-city and affluent schools, a scuba dive travel writer, a journalist, a transcriptionist for doctors and for documentary filmmakers, and a volunteer teacher in Kenya and the Yucatan. She considers the affirmative action plan she wrote for a maritime company to be perhaps her greatest work of fiction. Edgewise, set in a gritty Oakland setting, is Jan's autobiographical debut novel. She's almost finished her next, very different book--a romantic comedy set in the Ozarks. Look for it soon: Reading the Sweet Oak
