Twelve year old Kelin is visiting his grandmother on a Missouri farm.  His parents and siblings plan to join him but before they leave their California home, a deadly pandemic arises that will decimate the world's population.  Kelin's father, a teaching physician, instructs the grandmother to quarantine herself and Kelin.  Josh, a boy from a neighboring farm who is being watched over by the grandmother while his parents are on a trip, joins them in quarantine.  Kelin's parents and siblings flee to a cabin in the Sierras.
